“The term bohemian has a bad reputation because it’s allied to myriad clichés, but Parisians originally adopted the term, associated with nomadic Gypsies, to describe artists and writers who stayed up all night and ignored the pressures of the industrial world.”Sarah Thornton, Seven Days in the Art World
Hi there! So today I thought I’d do a quick blog post on how to easily create a bohemian bedroom. Over the years I’ve had quite a few different homes/ bedrooms -from temporary student digs, to my first studio apartment- and for me it was always the most important thing to give my space my own boho stamp, to make it feel like a reflection of myself, and to turn it into a space where I felt most comfortable.
Boho Interiors – Easy Steps
My current living situation is far from ideal, but not entirely unusual for us millenials… yep, you guessed it, I’m back with my parents (after a few blissful years of independence in a big city -Rotterdam). A mixture of events lead to me moving back here, but instead of dwelling on my loss of independence I decided to make the most of the situation and create my own little sanctuary. I guess that’s what interior design can do for you, you can use it to create a safe space for yourself, a haven of tranquility and calm. So, with that in mind I thought I’d give you some of my easy tips that I’ve learnt along the way to create your own bohemian space.
Layers and Layers of Texture
One thing I absolutely love to do is add lots of textures to a space. By using throws, different cushions and carpets your space instantly feels warmer and more comforting. My ‘special trick’ is to layer a couple of rugs of different shapes, sizes, colours and textures over each other thereby creating depth and dimension (especially in small rooms!) and I love a decorative throw on the bed.
No boho space is complete without lots of natural textures and vibes. Think wicker baskets and chairs, lots of green plants and energy-producing crystals.
Display, Display, Display
While I do like a tidy and organised space, I’ve also never been afraid to display all of my favourite things. My pretty perfume bottles, including my signature scent take pride of place, my favourite shoes/bags/clothes hang neatly from a clothing rack, and, of course, no space is complete without some cool artwork on the walls (like my gorgeous Alfons Mucha prints) & your most cherished memories displayed in cool frames.
Finishing Touches To Your Bohemian Haven
There are a number of finishing touches that I always have to have in a room to make it feel good and positive. It starts with beautiful scented candles & incense, then some great vintage vases filled with colourful blooms, and finally some great lighting. I’m in LOVE with my salt lamp and neon heart light!
Bohemian Interiors – quick & easy tips
So those were my tips and suggestions for creating your own perfect bohemian interior. I hope they helped inspire you to get started on redecorating your own space! To me it’s so important to create that perfect haven for yourself, one that reflects your own personality and your own interests, so have a go and see where the flow of decorating takes you.
Lots of love
